Lent Knitting Journey 2020

This Lent, several us set out on a Lent Knitting Journey. Victoria had designed a scarf pattern to cover 40 days (every day in Lent except for Sundays) with a different verse for each day and the knitting designed to reflect the verse in some way. (Her pattern is available on LoveCrafts or there is also a “Spoiler-free” version.) 16 of us were also part of a WhatsApp group in which we shared pictures, thoughts and encouragement. With the COVID-19 pandemic reaching Britain during this time, the group, the verses, the knitting and the prayer became for many of us a wonderful oasis in our suddenly changed lives.

Here is a glimpse of the journey we have been on…

“An ENORMOUS thank you for leading us on this Lent journey. Not all of us have ‘kept up’ (I’m still several days behind) but I’m sure I speak for everyone in saying what a comfort this process has been, in a time that has been more strange and difficult than any of us could have imagined when we started this.”

Day 1: Ash Wednesday, Genesis 3:19
By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.
Day 2: Psalm 139:13
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Day 3: Matthew 4:19
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
Day 4: Luke 15:4
“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?

“It was fun to write this pattern and I’m enjoying being part of this group.”

Day 5: Psalm 77:19

“Everyday, my friends who I live with ask to see the knitting I’ve done that day, and they’re really interested and get quite excited about it, especially the days with images! It’s so lovely to share it with them even though they’re not knitting one themselves. And I’ve now been asked to teach one of them how to knit!”

Day 17: Psalm 24:7

“I really appreciate the trouble you’ve gone to with getting the whole of this pattern together and linking it to bible verses. It has become a real talking point, especially with my daughter, about which bible verse I’m knitting. I also think now more than ever it is great to have something to look forward to doing each day and to be part of this group. I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking this.
It has been a wonderful thing to do this lent and I don’t think any of us knew quite how much it would mean to us when we started it back in February.”

 

Light a candle of hope

The presidents of Churches Together in England have issued a call to prayer in the light of the Coronavirus pandemic. This is for all churches and people of prayer to join on Sunday 22nd March, Mothering Sunday.

They write….

This Mothering Sunday, 22nd March, we are calling all churches to a National Day of Prayer and Action. At such a time as this, when so many are fearful and there is great uncertainty, we are reminded of our dependence on our loving Heavenly Father and the future that he holds.

At 7pm this Sunday, light a candle in the windows of your homes as a visible symbol of the light of life, Jesus Christ, our source and hope in prayer.

Whether you are continuing to worship as congregations or not, we have the great privilege and freedom to be able to call upon God, wherever we are, individually and corporately, for healing in our nation. We would pray for all in leadership at this time, making decisions about the containment of the COVID-19 virus, for those working in health and social care, and especially for the most vulnerable, whether elderly or those with underlying health conditions.

There are already stories being told of wonderful acts of kindness across neighbourhoods. Alongside your prayers, take the opportunity to telephone or email someone who is isolated, buy some additional food for your local foodbank, or offer to deliver shopping for an elderly neighbour. We may not be able to touch physically, but we can make connections in so many other ways.

In the meantime, do please attend to all the government health advice that will be issued, and look out for resources from your specific church governing bodies. At least for those of us in the global North, we do seem to be in unusual times, and wisdom and flexibility about worship gatherings are a key part of our Christian discipleship during this period.

We note that this call to prayer and action comes on Mothering Sunday: a time of thankfulness, remembering especially mothers who have served us, often in very costly ways. It is also a very mixed day for many. For some the remembrance is painful, and for others Mothering Sunday is a reminder of disappointment or loss. In many ways, this period under the shadow of the coronavirus will be prompting similarly diverse reactions and so it seems especially appropriate that the call to prayer is made this Sunday. At this time of uncertainty join in with the National Day of Prayer and Action, lighting a candle of hope*.

When the world feels crazy, it’s even more important to remind children that true hope and peace come from Jesus. Sermons4kids are offering free downloadable  lectionary based activities for parents and others who might not be able to attend Sunday worship. Although it comes out of the USA, the activities include video’s, work and colouring sheets. Parents may need to correct the spelling to UK English.

Coronavirus guidance – Suspension of worship services

17th March 2020

Following updated guidance from the Government and The Methodist Church we will be suspending public worship activities at Victoria Methodist Church with immediate effect until further notice.

We will keep you informed of any updates on our website (https://www.vic-methodist-bristol.org.uk/), on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/vicmethodistbristol) and via the newsletter. If you would like to receive our weekly notice sheet by email, please send us a request via Facebook Messenger.

We pray for those affected or with loved ones affected by the disease and for all those who are finding this situation difficult. We pray for your church in this time of uncertainty, for those needing to make decisions in order to care for each other, for those who will feel more isolated by not being able to attend.

The Methodist Church UK website https://www.methodist.org.uk and Bristol & South Gloucestershire Methodist Circuit website https://www.bsgc.org.uk  have more information and advice to help congregations through this difficult period.

Inside Out art exhibition for Lent

Great to have art from Gloucestershire’s Inside Out artists in the sanctuary for Lent. Thanks for leading our worship and speaking to us on Sunday, Phil Summers and Royce Murphy. More to come on 21st March with a textile workshop with Liz Robertson in the afternoon (2-4 pm) and a discussion with the whole ‘Inside Out’ group in the evening (6-8pm). And on Sunday, 5th April artist Amy Richardson who is also exhibiting her work will speak to us over lunch (12.30-2pm, lunch provided). Come and see these amazing works of art until 11 April  Mon, Tues, Thur, Fri 1-4pm, Wed 2-4pm and Sat 10-4pm. Admission Free.

Buffalo Bikes Art Exhibition

Great to have the Buffalo Bikes art exhibition at Vic this week. It is organised by students at the SGS Art School next door and is raising money to send bikes to Africa.

Come and Sing Fauré’s Requiem and Haydn’s Nelson Mass

Thanks to Lyn Lloyd-Jones and Geoff Wickham under whose direction a Come and Sing choir filled the church with the beautiful sound of Fauré’s Requiem and Haydn’s Nelson Mass this November. Thanks also to our wonderful soloists, Lottie Newstead, Lis Scott, Mike Culshaw and Charlie Morris and our organist, Claire Alsop.
